The need to Improve the quality of life
The main objective of our project is to reduce pollution, which is threatening many lives and leading to serious problems in the Metropolitan area of Milan. Pollution is a complex theme which has many causes and consequences which makes it challenging to define a starting point.
As a first approach, we dealt with the deconstruction of the metropolitan city in infrastructures, energy sources, streets, waters, and urbanised areas. What caught attention was the presence of scattered abandoned fields and buildings, often representing the characteristic of each area: from rural to specific industries, for example the textile around the Olona or the metalworking in Sesto and San Giovanni.
Our interest is to propose spaces for the community, aiming in particular to the awareness of the population towards cultural traditions and reconnection to the landscape. The success of the municipality’s commitment to improve the quality of live depends on the support of its citizens who must be well informed about local and nation-wide pollution problems and about the progress on abatement of pollution.
Later on, our analysis clearly demonstrated how the northern area of the city is densely causing emissions. For this reason, we decided to approach this theme by investigating which are the elements responsible for the emissions and if there are alternative solutions to propose.
Infrastructures have started to spread with a radio centric system and the north has developed strongly along this axis. However there is a lack of horizontal connections, and those which are present are fragmented and disconnected. To move from north east to north west, often the fastest rout is by car or passing by Milan with public transportation, which of course makes the journeys long.
The combination of these two elements, pollution and infrastructural lack, highlight clearly that one of the most critic areas is the horizontal area in the north of Milan.
The project Three + One approaches the pollution issue through the weaving of three categories of elements: Green, Blue and Orange. The infrastructures are strengthened in order to give accessibility and connection between the three elements.
